Sacred Harp singing remains a viable expression in the deep South and this collection draws from groups located primarily in Georgia and Alabama. The majority of the groups featured here recorded in the 1920s & 1930s in Atlanta, Georgia or left their homes to travel to Indiana and New York. What they carried with them was an old body of hymns and a uniquely singular way of performing them. Though each group brought their own personality to bear on the music, the common core of these performances is their distinctly rural character. From the plaintive Journey Home by Allisons Sacred Harp Singers to the exuberant Hallelujah by the Daniels-Deason Sacred Harp Singers, this collection covers the vast emotional range that characterizes genuine religious expression in song. This collection represents not only the first reissue of pre-war Sacred Harp singing but also the first time that many of these extremely rare sides have been heard since their original capture in 1927 & 1928. Beautifully re-mastered from the original 78s and packaged with rare photos, this set also features extensive notes by David Warren Steel. This CD will have definite appeal to old-time enthusiasts, historians, musicologists, and church choirs. |
