Helen Kane:
Boop-Boop-A-Doop
Formats and Pricing

Item currently unavailable.

Description The quintessential flapper was 52 Helen Kane, born Helen Schroeder (1904-1966). Marilyn Monroe may have captured the song in Some Like It Hot, but she was copying Helen Kane who created a sensation singing I Wanna Be Loved By You in the 1928 show Good Boy. Her trademark Boop-Boop-A-Doop interjections came about because: I just put it in at one of the rehearsals, a sort of interlude. Its hard to explain - I havent explained it to myself yet. Its like vo-de-o-do, Crosby with boo-boo-boo, and Durante with cha-cha-cha. The famous cartoon character Betty Boop was clearly modelled upon her (although she lost the court case when she sued!). At her peak there were Helen Kane dolls and Helen Kane lookalike competitions.

Helen Kanes centenary falls in August. Living Era celebrates with the first-ever complete set of all 22 recordings she made for Victor between 1928 and 1930. Her Bronx accented little girl voice uniquely recreates the flapper atmosphere of the 20s in hits such as Button Up Your Overcoat or Thats My Weakness Now. But theres more! Helen returned to the studios fully 20 years later, still Boop-Boop-A-Doop-ing. Five of these are included, among them a 1950 remake with Andr Previn, no less, of I Wanna Be Loved By You. 27 Original Mono Recordings From 1928-1951.
