Living Era gets The Blues. As note-writer and co-compiler Tony Russell says: Good Mornin, Blues is a viewing platform from which to observe the passing show of the blues . . . The blues is packed with contradictions and uncertainties and ambiguities . . . we cant pin it down, define it or confine it, all we can do is rejoice in its variety. And meanwhile, the blues quietly goes on renewing and remaking itself, year by year. Good Mornin, Blues illustrates how it did that during one momentous quarter-century.
From Leadbellys earthy hollering of the title-track, all the great legendary bluesmen are represented by a characteristic recording. The majority are blues singer-guitarists: Big Bill Broonzy, Blind Lemon Jefferson, Robert Johnson, Muddy Waters and so on. But there are also singer-pianists Roosevelt Sykes, Leroy Carr, singer-harmonia-players such as Sonny Terry, Sonny Boy Williamson, and blues-jazzmen like Jimmy Witherspoon, T-Bone Walker or Big Joe Turner.
This is the perfect CD for anyone wishing for a persuasive introduction to the genre. |
