| Description |
Charles Ellsworth, otherwise 'Pee Wee' Russell (1906-1969) produced one of the most individual sounds in jazz. A unique stylist, his clarinet tone has been described as "throaty", "asthmatic", "croaking" or "strangulated", yet he was a true poet of his instrument, capable of a passion and pathos few others could achieve. Certainly he was one of the greatest and most original of all jazz clarinettists, and became a central figure of the Chicago jazz scene. His was also one of the most distinctive faces, with his wrinkle-racked, lugubrious features. Take Me To The Land Of Jazz traces Russell's remarkable career through 24 classic tracks from the late Twenties to the mid Forties. It begins with his earliest successes with Red Nichols & his Five Pennies (Feelin' No Pain), alongside Bix Beiderbecke (Crying All Day), and on the historic Mound City Blue Blowers tracks with Coleman Hawkins (Hello, Lola & One Hour). He was an ever-present stalwart of the Eddie Condon style of 'Chicago jazz' and included are the very best of the many outstanding tracks made with Condon's buddies such as Bud Freeman (China Boy), Wild Bill Davison (That's A Plenty), Muggsy Spanier (Snag It) or Miff Mole (Peg O' My Heart). On Who's Sorry Now? he plays a storming tenor sax, and he provides a magnificent obbligato to Jack Teagarden's singing on Serenade To A Shylock. Russell seldom led his own band, but here we have Dinah with his Rhythmakers, two fine trio numbers from 1938 (I've Found A New Baby . . .), and the selection closes with his Hot Four in 1944 (Rose Of Washington Square . . .) and his 1946 Jazz Ensemble (Muskogee Blues). Original mono recordings from 1927-1946. |
