Harry Richman:
Puttin' On The Ritz

Item currently unavailable.

Description Flamboyant Harry Reichman (1895-1972) was, as "Harry Richman", a top entertainer of the late 20s and early 30s. A colourful nightclub, Broadway and movie musical star, his uninhibited vocal style was often compared to Al Jolson. Remarkably, he was also a pioneering pilot who set a world altitude record in 1935 and made the first-ever trans-Atlantic round trip in a single-engine plane! As his autobiography says, he had "A Hell Of A Life".
Irving Berlin's Puttin' On The Ritz sums up the Richman lifestyle. He it was who introduced the famous number in the 1929 film of the same name (before Astaire) and made it his theme song. It makes an appropriate title for Living Era's 25-track collection - the first-ever CD devoted to Harry Richman. There were other great standards that Richman also 'created' such as the De Sylva, Brown & Henderson songs in The George White Scandals: The Birth Of The Blues and Lucky Day.
Richman also collaborated in the composition of a number of popular songs, from his very first recording, the 1925 Will You Remember Me?, to the 1947 Walkin' My Baby Back Home, made a full decade after the height of his fame. In between he waxed a host of fine melodies, many of them still family favourites: Blue Skies, Pennies From Heaven, and the song Jimmy McHugh wrote especially for him in 1930, On The Sunny Side Of The Street. Original mono recordings from 1925-1947.
