| Description |
Jeanne-Marie Florentine Bourgeois (1873-1956), French singer and actress, conquered all the great music halls of Paris as "Mistinguett". During the first decade of the last century she created the notorious Apache dance, and became a top star at the Moulin Rouge, the Casino de Paris and, most famously, at the Folies-Bergre in a famous association with Maurice Chevalier. She revealed her famous legs in a hugely successful series of revues from 1919 to 1926, as well as in several films.
Nuits de Paris collects together her 25 most successful songs, from a c'est Paris in 1926 through to Mon homme in 1938. Her charismatic stage presence shines through these recordings of many of the favourite items from her revues, such as Je cherche un millionaire, La petite femme de Paris or the delightful six-minute sketch Sur l' boulevard des italiens. One or two will be familiar in their English versions such as Valencia, Qui? (Who?) or an uproarious La rumba d'amour (The Peanut Vendor). And Mistinguett herself tackles English in Irving Berlin's I'm On My Way Home. |
