| Description |
California didn’t become a major country and western music center until the 1940s. The phenomenal rise of Gene Autry and other singing cowboys in the middle of the ‘30s shifted the Los Angeles area scene into high gear a few years prior to that, and a mass migration of dust bowl migrants helped lay the groundwork for things to come all over the state; but it was the huge influx of war workers and servicemen during WWII, particularly to coastal cities, that really kicked off the Golden State’s golden era.
That is not to say, however, that there was not a lively scene before that. In terms of recording, though, the state lagged far behind the south, southwest and major media centers like Chicago and New York, where labels largely ignored the region’s cowboy and hillbilly artists. The popular Crockett Family, based initially in Fresno, had recorded for Brunswick, and the San Francisco Bay area institution Harry “Haywire Mac” McClintock record prolifically for Victor beginning in 1928. There were others including Len Nash – featured here – who were in the studios prior to the Stock Market crash of 1929. This collection gathers recordings by several other early California groups, les heralded and less obviously influential, but no less interesting. |
