| Description |
Ambrose Haley is one of those country music performers who are difficult to characterize and, like others in that category, his posthumous reputation has suffered from the fact that he is hard to pigeon-hole. It isn’t that he lacked a distinctive style, because he was unmistakable, but rather that he didn’t fit easily into any mainstream country sub-genres. He wasn’t a honky-tonker, or a crooner, nor even quite a western swing man, though he perhaps came closer to the latter than any other evocative classification. Indeed, though he spent almost his entire career happily defined as a hillbilly or country performer, what he really was was a throwback to the vaudeville era. |
