| Description |
In the years immediately following World War II, Country Music changed rapidly. It was seen as big business, and the powers that be began channeling their product towards a much wider audience. During the 1930s, although more and more artists were writing their own material, Country Music was still considered to be the music of the southern United States where almost all of it’s product was sold. With the advent of the singing cowboys in the movies, and the culture-mixing which inevitably took place during World War II, things would never be the same again. City folk were introduced to Country Music and in turn the people of the south became influenced by the more sophisticated music of the cities – and none more so than the Country singers and songwriters.
With this new style of Country Music there emerged a new style of singing, and this in turn produced a bewildering number of new artists all determined to reach the top of the pile. Many quickly faded from the scene but others became household names. There is no doubt that Hank Williams became the most famous of them all – but up there alongside was Webb Pierce, the King of Honky Tonk. Blessed with an exquisite singing voice and an uncanny knack of picking songs that immediately caught on, in his day he was a force to be reckoned with, becoming the benchmark that other singers aspired to. |
