| Description |
The significant role played by the Carter Sisters in country music history has been rather forgotten down the years, obscured by the unique place achieved by their mother, Maybelle, and the original Carter Family. Later on, after June Carter struck out on her own, the pre-eminence of Johnny Cash relegated her to another supporting role for several decades. But in between, during the early 1950s, she was a seriously aspiring recording star.
This CD spans the heyday of June Carter as a recording artist, when she made a memorable body of recordings: as a soloist, in duets with Homer & Jethro, with her husband, Carl Smith & with her sisters. The earliest recording here is from 1949 when Mother Maybelle and the Carter Sisters had just signed with RCA Victor. June was 20 years old and already a veteran of the family show. The latest track here is from 1956, by when the Carters had joined Columbia and June was about to branch away into an acting career and was on the brink of her second marriage, to ‘Rip’ Nix. |
