| Description |
Many historical accounts and in particular record reissues of the past generation or so have left the general impression of Dick Hartman’s Tennessee Ramblers as one of the most prolific examples of a Southeastern string band that reflected a similar approach and the same sort of influences as the western swing bands that flourished in the Southwest during the group’s heyday in the mid-1930s. This idea was and remains strengthened by the bands appearances as musical guest stars in two Gene Autry westerns of the period. This is not an inaccurate assessment, but it is slightly misleading.
Hartman’s Ramblers did indeed display a great deal of jazz, blues and pop influence, particularly on record, though not under that name in the most brazen examples – but rather under the aliases the Washboard Wonders and Heartman’s Heartbreakers. The band was far more a straightforward Carolina string band of the day than these pseudonymous recordings would indicate, a fact underscored – finally – by a reissue a few years ago on the Australian Cannonball label that collected the more mainstream recordings the band made under it’s actual working name during 1935-1936, before the burgeoning swing craze and the heady success of the jazzy Southwestern bands like Milton Brown & Bob Wills’. Prior to that production, anyone not familiar with the Ramblers rare original 78s – but rather only with the handful of reissued Washboard Wonders tracks and the reissues collecting all of the Hartman’s Heartbreaker records – could be forgiven for thinking the Ramblers were an out-and-out hillbilly swing band. ~Kevin Coffey |
