| Description |
In a short caption story about Ken Houchins, published in WLS magazine Stand By! November 7 1936, the writer commented: “Listeners say his voice reminds them of Gene Autry [sic].” The audiences of the powerful Chicago station were not the first people struck by the similarity. When Gennett Records signed Houchins four years earlier, it was partly because they had lost Autry’s services the year before and needed a sound-alike of the widely popular radio and recording artist. The first song Houchins cut for them was an Autry cover, There’s A Good Gal In The Mountains, and several other Autry derived numbers appeared among the three dozen sides Houchins made for Gennett’s Champion label over the next couple of years. |
