Description Unlike most artists associated with western balladry, James M. “Jim” Newill was a trained vocalist – though he is probably better known for his movie roles in countless B-status productions throughout the 1930s and ‘40s. Newill’s Hollywood career petered out after less than a decade but he still managed to notch up appearances in twenty-two films including starring roles as a “singing mountie” in Grand National’s “Renfrew Of The Royal Mounted” series and PRC’s “Texas Rangers” movies.

Jimmy Newill, with his cleft chin and rugged good looks, bore more than a passing resemblance to Fred McMurray; but he was vocally more aligned to the booming operatic styles of Dick Foran and George Houston than the easy-going crooning of Roy Rogers and Jimmy Wakely. Nevertheless, Newill managed to carve a moderate niche for himself during the singing cowboy boom and sang in many of his movie roles. He looked every inch the cowboy actor of the period, even though it seems highly unlikely that he ever made much money from acting. Only performers like Roy Rogers, Gene Autry, Tex Ritter and Rex Allen actually made the high-grades, and Jimmy Newill seemed destined to be an also-ran in whatever he did. What a pity, because he studied music at the University of California and by 1930 became a member of the Los Angeles Light Opera Company. It seemed that Jimmy Newill had everything going for him except luck, and details of his recorded output are sketchy, to say the very least.
