| Description |
In many biographies of the Girls of the Golden West it is said that they hailed from Muleshoe, Texas – in actual fact, they were born in Mount Carmel, Illinois, Mildred Fern (Millie) on April 11th 1913 and Dorothy Laverne (Dolly) on December 15th 1915. Their first broadcasts were for WIL in East St. Louis, with Dolly singing lead and playing guitar and Millie doing the harmonizing and yodeling. First known as the Goad Sisters they became the Good Sisters, then in 1930 finally settled on the Girls of the Golden West and traveled south to Texas where they broadcast over the powerful XER border radio station. Their stay in Texas was short and they returned to Illinois after a few months. The following year the girls were invited on to the roster of the famous WLS “National Barndance” in Chicago where they were an instant success with their twin yodeling, possibly the first act to do so, renditions of old cowboy songs and their beautiful costumes, which they made themselves.
On February 28th 1933 they cut the first of their 64 sides, initially for Vocalion Records. In addition to their regular broadcasts and making records they traveled a great deal with the “National Barndance” touring shows. |
