| Description |
This 100 title anthology celebrates the recorded legacy of clarinettist Jimmie Noone, from his earliest recordings until his final studio session. The timespan encompasses the evolution of the music itself. Noone proved equal to these challenges. Yet throughout, he remained true to his own musical values, which were formed during his boyhood in New Orleans. Born just outside the city, in the suburb Cut Off, in April 1895, Noone moved to the Crescent City in 1910. Already proficient on guitar, Noone switched to clarinet. As a member of the Creole community, Noone would have heard opera and concert music generally, plus less formal Caribbean-style patois songs.
Noone's first professional experience was deputizing for Sidney Bechet. Before he reached his mid-teens Noone had established his reputation. He worked with cornettist Freddie Keppard; with the Olympia Brass Band; with the bands of Kid Ory and Oscar Celestin.
When the City's official Red Light district, Storyville, Noone, like many others, worked his way upriver to Chicago. There he worked again with Freddie Keppard.
Noone then worked alongside cornettist King Oliver in bassist Bill Johnson's Band at The Royal Garden, on Chicago's South Side, which Oliver himself would take over at the same venue. Noone may have deputized for Johnny Dodds on a King Oliver Creole Jazz Band recording date, in October 1923.
He is definitely is present on the opening number here, Play That Thing, recorded under the leadership of drummer Ollie Powers. Five 'takes' were required and all were released. This version finds Noone's mellow, reflective lines being contrasted by the powerful muted trumpet of Tommy Ladnier, a fellow New Orleanian. |
