| Description |
Wilma Leigh Leary and Dale Troy Cooper were a husband and wife team whose musical output fell between two stools, Old-Time and Bluegrass, but it would be true to say that, together with there backing group the Clinch Mountain Clan, they ploughed their own furrow in terms of creating an identifiable sound. One has only to listen to such songs as There’s A Big Wheel, Big Midnight Special and Cheated Too, to realize that Wilma and Stoney were innovators with one eye on the commercial market but otherwise deeply entrenched in the roots of genuine hillbilly mountain music. Despite their line-up of fiddle, dobro, mandolin and banjo, Wilma and Stoney were not averse to using thumping drum sounds to emphasize the appeal of songs like Don Gibson’s There’s A Big Wheel and yet could resort to real traditionalism with Rachel’s Guitar, Sunny Side Of The Mountain, The Canadian Reel and I’ve Been Cheated Too.
This appealing couple began recording for Rich-R-Tone in 1947 but moved to the prestigious Columbia label two years later and produced a steady output of popular mountain-flavored songs throughout the 1950s. Once their Columbia contract expired, Wilma Lee & Stoney cut various sides for Decca, Starday, Hickory and Rounder and, whilst they never attained true country superstar status, they remained a potent commercial force for decades. |
