| Description |
This CD concentrates on the Prairie Ramblers early years. Most of the recordings come from the classic 1935-1938 period – significantly, running up to the final session the band’s original fiddler, Tex Atchison, cut with the band in September 1938 – with two additional recordings from the bands final prewar session of June 1941 closing out the disc. It captures the hard-to-pigeonhole Ramblers in a variety of styles and settings, from religious numbers to the good old hokum of the bands alter ego the Sweet Violet Boys. In between these there is all sorts, including driving string band music from the mid-30s that has caused some observers (including Atchison himself) to claim the Ramblers as the direct forerunners of bluegrass, as well as more deliberately modern string band swing. |
